तस्य भित्त्वा तनुत्राणं देहं निर्भिद्य चाशुगः ॥
प्राविशद् धरणीं राजन् वल्मीकम् इव पन्नगः ॥
स तेनातिप्रहारेण व्यथितो विह्वलन्न् इव ॥
संचचाल रणे कर्णः क्षितिकम्पे यथाचलः ॥

Piercing his [Karna's] armor and passing through his body, the swift arrow went into the earth, O king, just as a serpent goes into an anthill. Karna, shaken by that mighty blow, staggered and reeled in the battle, like a mountain in an earthquake.

The boy makes Karna himself -- the most fearsome of enemies -- stagger, 'like a mountain in an earthquake.' A child shakes the one thought immovable: even the greatest could not withstand his arrow. It is telling that the tradition likens Karna to a mountain, and the boy to the force of an earthquake capable of shaking even a mountain. The verse teaches that nothing on earth is so immovable that true valor cannot shake it; that even the greatest warrior is vulnerable, and the boy's blow shakes him as the depths of the earth shake a mountain; and that in this shaking of Karna the height of Abhimanyu's glory reveals itself -- he, a child, for a moment overcame the mightiest, and that moment will remain in memory, whatever his fate may prove to be.
