"[The sin of] plundering another's wealth, of unrestrained wrath, and of greed, of the darkening of wisdom, of most grievous treachery, and of the seizure of the kingdom from the fierce archers — my fathers — that retribution, from the wrath of the great-souled ones, has now overtaken you. Receive at once the fierce fruit of unrighteousness, O malicious one; now I shall chastise you with arrows before the eyes of the whole army."

Abhimanyu enumerates the chain of the Kauravas' sins — greed, wrath, darkened understanding, treachery, seizure of the kingdom — and proclaims: "the fruit of unrighteousness has overtaken you." Thus tradition, through the boy's mouth, pronounces the law of retribution: evil done returns to the guilty one in its hour. It is telling that he calls himself merely the instrument of "the wrath of the great-souled ones" — moved not by personal vengeance but by the fulfillment of justice. The verse teaches that unrighteousness inevitably bears its bitter fruit, and the hour of reckoning comes to every misdeed; that retribution is carried out not as a whim but as a law, plain even to a boy; and that the righteous chastiser knows himself not as an avenger of his own wrongs but as the hand of justice exacting payment for trampled dharma — and so his punishment is bright, not malicious.
