निशामुखे बडवृकगृध्रमोदनं; महात्मनां नृपवरयुद्धम् अद्भुतम् ॥

niśāmukhe baḍavṛkagṛdhramodanaṃ; mahātmanāṃ nṛpavarayuddham adbhutam ||
Then, when the army was greatly shaken at the start of night, Vrikodara, well-honored by the bull-like kings, of great strength, with eyes like an opened lotus, the mighty one, honored King Yudhishthira. Then the twins, Drupada, Virata, the Kekayas, and Yudhishthira too came to the highest joy, and they greatly honored Vrikodara, as the gods honored Hara at the slaying of Andhaka. Then your sons, resembling the son of Varuna, filled with wrath, together with the great-souled teacher, tightly surrounded Vrikodara — with chariots, infantry, and elephants — eager for battle. Then it became as if covered by dense darkness, in great terror, terror-giving, exceedingly dreadful — at the start of night, a feast for crows, wolves, and vultures — the wondrous battle of the best of kings, the great-souled ones.

Bhima, honored by his brothers as the gods once honored Shiva after the slaying of Andhaka, himself first honors Yudhishthira: reverence for one's elder outweighs the glory of the deed. It is telling that the chapter ends with the image of "a feast for crows and wolves": behind every triumph stands a field of the dead. The verse teaches that the valiant attribute their praise to the head of their house, not claiming it for themselves; and that war, however "wondrous," in the end is only food for scavengers — the bitter outcome of all martial greatness.
