तेषां तु युयुधानेन युध्यतां युधि भारत ॥

तेन शब्देन महता पूरितासीद् वसुंधरा ॥
रात्रिः समभवच् चैव तीव्ररूपा भयावहा ॥
दीर्यमाणं बलं दृष्ट्वा युयुधानशराहतम् ॥
श्रुत्वा च विपुलं नादं निशीथे लोमहर्षणम् ॥
सुतस् तवाब्रवीद् राजन् सारथिं रथिनां वरः ॥
यत्रैष शब्दस् तत्राश्वांश् चोदयेति पुनः पुनः ॥

sutas tavābravīd rājan sārathiṃ rathināṃ varaḥ ||
yatraiṣa śabdas tatrāśvāṃś codayeti punaḥ punaḥ ||
Among them too, as they fought in battle with Yuyudhana, O Bharata, there stood a tumultuous roar, as if of wailing dead. With that great sound the earth was filled, and the night became fierce in appearance, terror-inspiring. Seeing the army being shattered, struck by the arrows of Yuyudhana, and having heard the loud cry, hair-raising, at midnight, your son, O king, said to the charioteer, the best of warriors: 'Where this roar is, drive the horses there' -- again and again.

The roar of battle is likened to the wail of the dead, and the night becomes 'fierce in appearance': the battlefield turns into an antechamber of the realm of the dead. It is significant that Duryodhana himself rushes toward this cry -- toward the place where his own men are perishing. The verse teaches that in the hour of disaster a leader must go toward the cry of calamity, not away from it; and Duryodhana, for all his faults, does not flee the horror but orders the horses driven where his army groans loudest.
