Having seen Bhima in battle, seized point-blank by the rakshasa, Vasudeva [Krishna] then spoke thus to Ghatotkacha: "Look, O mighty-armed one, at Bhima, seized point-blank by the rakshasa, before the eyes of all the armies and yours, O greatly radiant one. Abandon Karna and slay quickly, O mighty-armed one, the lord of the rakshasas, Alayudha; afterward you will slay Karna." He, having heard the word of the Varshneya [Krishna], the valiant Ghatotkacha abandoned Karna and fought with the lord of the rakshasas, the brother of Baka.

Krishna draws Ghatotkacha away from Karna to save the father: saving a kinsman matters more than finishing a glorious duel. It is telling that Ghatotkacha obeys without hesitation — love for his father outweighs martial ambition. The verse teaches that in the hierarchy of duty, love for kin and the rescue of a loved one stand above personal glory; and one who leaves a brilliant battle to save his father shows not weakness but the highest loyalty.
