Dhrishtadyumna, Shikhandin and the rest, the Panchalas, great warriors, seeing them being slaughtered, Bhima, of terrible prowess, rushed swiftly at Karna, showering arrows in the fight. Then they too came, having slaughtered the rakshasas, to where the suta's son was: Nakula and Sahadeva, and Satyaki, the great warrior; they fought with Karna, and the Panchalas — with Drona. And Alayudha, enraged, struck Ghatotkacha, the tamer of foes, on the head with a monstrous mace.

The battle draws together into two knots: many heroes surround Karna, the Panchalas surround Drona, while Ghatotkacha and Alayudha fight apart. It is telling that Bhima hastens to rescue the beleaguered Panchalas — concern for his allies drives him. The verse teaches that in a shared cause, help comes by turns: wherever one is in danger, the others rush there; and this weave of mutual rescues is the living fabric that holds an army together in the hour of trial.
