संजय उवाच
हैडिम्बं निहतं दृष्ट्वा विकीर्णम् इव पर्वतम् ॥
पाण्डवा दीनमनसः सर्वे बाष्पाकुलेक्षणाः ॥
वासुदेवस् तु हर्षेण महताभिपरिप्लुतः ॥
ननाद सिंहवन् नादं व्यथयन्न् इव भारत ॥
विनद्य च महानादं पर्यष्वजत फल्गुनम् ॥
स विनद्य महानादम् अभीशून् संनियम्य च ॥
ननर्त हर्षसंवीतो वातोद्धूत इव द्रुमः ॥
ततो विनिर्भ्राम्य पुनः पार्थम् आस्फोट्य चासकृत् ॥
रथोपस्थगतो भीमं प्राणदत् पुनर् अच्युतः ॥

vinadya ca mahānādaṃ paryaṣvajata phalgunam ||
sa vinadya mahānādam abhīśūn saṃniyamya ca ||
nanarta harṣasaṃvīto vātoddhūta iva drumaḥ ||
tato vinirbhrāmya punaḥ pārtham āsphoṭya cāsakṛt ||
rathopasthagato bhīmaṃ prāṇadat punar acyutaḥ ||
Seeing the son of Hidimba slain, like a scattered mountain, the Pandavas all, dejected in spirit, with eyes full of tears. But Vasudeva, overwhelmed with great joy, uttered a lion's roar, as if frightening [the enemies], O Bharata; and, having roared a great roar, embraced Phalguna. The grief of the Pandavas and the rejoicing of Krishna stand side by side: over the very same event -- tears and dance. It is significant that the Lord rejoices where men weep: he knows the hidden meaning, they do not. The verse teaches that between the visible and the true meaning of an event lies a gulf; and one who perceives the design from above sees victory where the shortsighted see only loss -- so joy and grief alike depend on the height from which one looks.
