प्रहृष्टमनसं ज्ञात्वा वासुदेवं महाबलम् ॥

अतिहर्षो ऽयम् अस्थाने तवाद्य मधुसूदन ॥
शोकस्थाने परे प्राप्ते हैडिम्बस्य वधेन वै ॥
विमुखानि च सैन्यानि हतं दृष्ट्वा घटोत्कचम् ॥
वयं च भृशम् आविग्ना हैडिम्बस्य निपातनात् ॥
नैतत् कारणम् अल्पं हि भविष्यति जनार्दन ॥
तद् अद्य शंस मे पृष्टः सत्यं सत्यवतां वर ॥

Understanding that [Krishna] had rejoiced, Arjuna spoke to Vasudeva, the mighty, O king, himself not overly joyful: "This excessive joy of yours is out of place now, O Madhusudana, when the gravest occasion for grief has arrived -- by the slaying of the son of Hidimba. And the armies have turned away, seeing Ghatotkacha slain, and we are greatly distressed by the fall of the son of Hidimba. For your reason must not be small, O Janardana."

Arjuna does not hide his bewilderment, but asks directly: why joy in an hour of grief? It is significant that he trusts -- "the reason must not be small": behind the wise one's inexplicable behavior he senses a hidden meaning. The verse teaches that trust in one's neighbor bids one seek a reasonable cause in his strange act rather than condemn at once; and an honest question asked in faith is better than silent condemnation -- for it opens the way to understanding.
