ततो मुहूर्ताद् भुवनं ज्योतिर्भूतम् इवाभवत् ॥
अप्रख्यम् अप्रकाशं च जगामाशु तमस् तथा ॥
प्रतिप्रकाशिते लोके दिवाभूते निशाकरे ॥
विचेरुर् न विचेरुश् च राजन् नक्तंचरास् ततः ॥
बोध्यमानं तु तत् सैन्यं राजंश् चन्द्रस्य रश्मिभिः ॥
बुबुधे शतपत्राणां वनं महद् इवाम्भसि ॥
यथा चन्द्रोदयोद्धूतः क्षुभितः सागरो भवेत् ॥
तथा चन्द्रोदयोद्धूतः स बभूव बलार्णवः ॥
ततः प्रववृते युद्धं पुनर् एव विशां पते ॥
लोके लोकविनाशाय परं लोकम् अभीप्सताम् ॥

bodhyamānaṃ tu tat sainyaṃ rājaṃś candrasya raśmibhiḥ ||
bubudhe śatapatrāṇāṃ vanaṃ mahad ivāmbhasi ||
yathā candrodayoddhūtaḥ kṣubhitaḥ sāgaro bhavet ||
tathā candrodayoddhūtaḥ sa babhūva balārṇavaḥ ||
tataḥ pravavṛte yuddhaṃ punar eva viśāṃ pate ||
loke lokavināśāya paraṃ lokam abhīpsatām ||
Dispelling the darkness with their radiance, those moonbeams slowly swept over every quarter, the sky, and the earth. Then, in a moment, the world became as if wholly light; unseen and unlit, the darkness swiftly departed. When the world was illumined, when the moon had become as day, some night-wanderers [rakshasas] roamed and others did not, O king. And that army, roused by the rays of the moon, O king, awoke like a great forest of lotuses in water. As the ocean, stirred by the rising moon, would surge, so, stirred by the moonrise, that army became an ocean of troops. Then the battle broke out once more, O lord of peoples, in the world — for the destruction of the world, among those craving the highest world [heaven].

The chapter closes on a bitter paradox: warriors roused from a merciful sleep again crave the "highest world" — heaven — even as they act "for the destruction of the world." It is telling that the brief respite ends only in renewed slaughter. The verse teaches that man ruins the world while hoping to gain paradise: seeking the higher, he destroys what is near at hand. Here lies the tragedy of war — present life is trampled for the sake of a future bliss, and the mercy of night gives way to fresh bloodshed at dawn.
