हस्तैर् हस्ताग्रम् अपरे प्रत्यपिंषन् नराधिपाः ॥
अपरे दशनैर् ओष्ठान् अदशन् क्रोधमूर्छिताः ॥
व्याक्षिपन्न् आयुधान् अन्ये ममृदुश् चापरे भुजान् ॥
अन्ये चान्वपतन् द्रोणं त्यक्तात्मानो महौजसः ॥
पाञ्चालास् तु विशेषेण द्रोणसायकपीडिताः ॥
समसज्जन्त राजेन्द्र समरे भृशवेदनाः ॥
ततो विराटद्रुपदौ द्रोणं प्रतिययू रणे ॥
तथा चरन्तं संग्रामे भृशं समरदुर्जयम् ॥

Others were amazed, others were indignant; others -- hand to hand -- clenched, the lords of men; others with their teeth bit their lips, having gone mad with wrath. Others brandished weapons, others wrung their own arms; while others rushed upon Drona, sparing themselves not, the mighty ones. The Panchalas especially, hard-pressed by Drona's arrows, grappled [in battle], O lord of kings, in battle, greatly suffering. Then Virata and Drupada went against Drona in battle.

The verse shows the whole range of feeling before the dread Drona: shock, rage, clenched hands, bitten lips, a self-forgetting rush. Notable is how the epic looks into faces, not only at blows. The verse teaches that war is also a storm of passions: behind the weapon are trembling, raging, despairing hearts; and the true picture of battle is composed not of wounds alone, but of the movements of the soul that move the warrior's hand.
