अभिसंश्लिष्टयोस् तत्र तयोर् आहवशौण्डयोः ॥
अभिन्नशरपातत्वाद् गदायुद्धम् अवर्तत ॥
गदया भीमसेनस् तु कर्णस्य रथकूबरम् ॥
बिभेदाशु तदा राजंस् तद् अद्भुतम् इवाभवत् ॥
ततो भीमस्य राधेयो गदाम् आदाय वीर्यवान् ॥
अवासृजद् रथे तां तु बिभेद गदया गदाम् ॥
ततो भीमः पुनर् गुर्वीं चिक्षेपाधिरथेर् गदाम् ॥
तां शरैर् दशभिः कर्णः सुपुङ्खैः सुसमाहितैः ॥
प्रत्यविध्यत् पुनश् चान्यैः सा भीमं पुनर् आव्रजत् ॥

abhinnaśarapātatvād gadāyuddham avartata ||
gadayā bhīmasenas tu karṇasya rathakūbaram ||
bibhedāśu tadā rājaṃs tad adbhutam ivābhavat ||
tato bhīmasya rādheyo gadām ādāya vīryavān ||
avāsṛjad rathe tāṃ tu bibheda gadayā gadām ||
tato bhīmaḥ punar gurvīṃ cikṣepādhirather gadām ||
tāṃ śarair daśabhiḥ karṇaḥ supuṅkhaiḥ susamāhitaiḥ ||
pratyavidhyat punaś cānyaiḥ sā bhīmaṃ punar āvrajat ||
As the two of them, locked together there and intoxicated with battle, drew so close that arrows could no longer fly true between them, a battle of maces began. And Bhimasena with his mace swiftly shattered Karna's chariot pole then, O king; and it was as if a marvel. Then Radheya, the valiant one, taking up a mace, hurled it at Bhima's chariot; Bhima shattered that mace with his own. Then Bhima again hurled a heavy mace at the son of Adhiratha; and Karna, with ten well-feathered, accurately aimed arrows...

At such close range arrows become useless -- maces come into play: the battle descends into raw force where the art of ranged combat is powerless. It is telling that Bhima shatters the chariot pole with his mace 'as if it were a marvel.' The verse teaches that every weapon has its proper range: what strikes from afar is futile up close; and the wise warrior changes his method with circumstance -- where the arrow cannot reach, the blow of a heavy hand decides.
