येन रामाद् अवाप्येह धनुर्वेदं महात्मना ॥
प्रोक्तान्य् अस्त्राणि दिव्यानि पुत्राय गुरुकाङ्क्षिणे ॥
एकम् एव हि लोके ऽस्मिन्न् आत्मनो गुणवत्तरम् ॥
इच्छन्ति पुत्रं पुरुषा लोके नान्यं कथं चन ॥
आचार्याणां भवन्त्य् एव रहस्यानि महात्मनाम् ॥
तानि पुत्राय वा दद्युः शिष्यायानुगताय वा ॥
yena rāmād avāpyeha dhanurvedaṃ mahātmanā ||
proktāny astrāṇi divyāni putrāya gurukāṅkṣiṇe ||
ekam eva hi loke 'sminn ātmano guṇavattaram ||
icchanti putraṃ puruṣā loke nānyaṃ kathaṃ cana ||
ācāryāṇāṃ bhavanty eva rahasyāni mahātmanām ||
tāni putrāya vā dadyuḥ śiṣyāyānugatāya vā ||
He who, being of great soul, having obtained from Rama Parashurama here the science of archery, declared the divine weapons to his son, who honored him as guru. For only one thing in this world do people desire — a son more worthy than themselves — and nothing else at all. Acharyas of great soul have their secrets; these they would give to a son or to a devoted disciple.

Dhritarashtra foresees what Ashvatthaman will become: a son to whom the father passed on the hidden secrets of weaponry. It is telling that he observes people wish for a son "more worthy than themselves" — in this natural longing lies also the seed of the coming vengeance: Drona's love for his son will answer in the son's fury for his father. The verse teaches that the bonds of transmitted knowledge and blood are sacred and mutual; one who has received from a father both gift and secret feels bound to the end — even unto terrible retribution.
