A hymn to the unthinkable nature of the One. anejad ekaṁ manaso javīyaḥ — "unmoving, one, swifter than the mind". The logic of the world knows either rest or motion; the Absolute is described by mutually exclusive definitions at once, and this is not poetic licence but exact theological method: contradictions unresolvable for reason are serenely combined in Him who wields an inconceivable power — acintya-śakti. He "stands" because He is forever self-sufficient and strives nowhere; He is "swifter than the mind" because wherever thought may fly, He is already there. nainad devā āpnuvan — not even the gods overtake Him: neither the senses, nor the forces of nature, nor the mightiest of beings can encompass Him who is ahead of them all (pūrvam arṣat — "He has gone before").
The last line brings us back from these heights to the order of the world: tasminn apo mātariśvā dadhāti — "in Him Mātariśvan (the wind, the cosmic breath) holds the waters". All the activity of the universe — the circulation of waters, the breath of life, the labours of the gods — is carried on "in Him" and by His power: it is not He who is in the world, but the world that is in Him. In the Bhagavad-gītā (9.4) He says so Himself: mayā tatam idaṁ sarvaṁ jagad avyakta-mūrtinā — "by Me, in My unmanifest form, this whole world is pervaded".
Mantras 4 and 5 form a pair: the fourth gives the paradoxes of His might, the fifth the paradoxes of His nearness. Together they guard the mystery of the Lord from two simplifying extremes: taking Him to be remote and indifferent — or dissolving Him into the world.
