Like the tenth, the thirteenth mantra secures the distinction by an appeal to tradition: the worship of the manifest has one fruit, the worship of the unmanifest another — "so have we heard from the wise". The fruits are indeed different: one who worships the manifest gains power and prosperity within the world — and loses them together with the world; one who worships the unmanifest attains dissolution in the undifferentiated — a peace bought at the price of the very capacity to see, to love and to serve. Neither is the immortality that the Upaniṣad promises.
The repetition of the formula śuśruma dhīrāṇām in the second triad is no accident: the subtler the matter, the more one needs the support of hearing. About the fruits of activity one may judge from experience; but of the posthumous lot of those who worship the manifest or the unmanifest the traveller has no experience of his own and can have none — here only the testimony of those who see can guide. So the Upaniṣad once again humbles the self-satisfied intellect: in the highest questions an honest reason leans on revelation as the eye leans on light.
