In a man, verily, this first becomes an embryo — that seed: the vigour gathered out of all the limbs; he bears his own self within himself. When he pours it into a woman, then he begets it. This is his first birth.

The second chapter is about the three births of man, and the first of them takes place… in the father. puruṣe ha vā ayam ādito garbho bhavati — "in a man [the male] there first comes to be an embryo": yad etad retaḥ — the seed, and it is defined with reverence: sarvebhyo 'ṅgebhyas tejaḥ sambhūtam — "the vigour gathered out of all the limbs": a concentrate of the whole man, his life drawn together into a drop; ātmany evātmānaṁ bibharti — "in himself he bears his own self": the father is pregnant with himself before the mother is!
tad yadā striyāṁ siñcati atha enaj janayati — "when he pours it into a woman, then he begets it": conception is called a birth: tad asya prathamaṁ janma — "this is his first birth": man is born three times, and the first time is from father into mother: a pouring of oneself into one's continuation.
The sense of the chapter is the sanctification of the very tissue of procreation: what biology calls reproduction the Upaniṣad sees as the journey of the ātman down the channel of a family: the father literally gives himself away — his gathered vigour — onwards. From this will grow both responsibility (the following verses on care) and the tradition's utter seriousness about conception: it is not physiology but the first of the three births of an eternal traveller.
