Thus knowing, he, when this body is dissolved, ascends on high and, obtaining all desires in that heavenly world, becomes immortal. Becomes [immortal].

The close of the second chapter — the destiny of the knower: sa evaṁ vidvān — "thus knowing" (the three births, through and through, like Vāmadeva) — asmāc charīra-bhedāt ūrdhvam utkramya — "at the dissolution of the body, ascending on high" (ūrdhvam — by that same vertical path of the falcon and the door in the crown!) — amuṣmin svarge loke sarvān kāmān āptvā — "obtaining all desires in that shining world" — amṛtaḥ samabhavat — "he became immortal".
Note the link: "having obtained all desires — he became immortal": this is not a renunciation of desires but their fulfilment to the last drop: the fullness after which there is nothing left to desire is the very threshold of immortality (the Taittirīya: "he enjoys all desires together with Brahman"; the Muṇḍaka: āpta-kāma — "one whose desires are fulfilled"). Immortality is not hunger raised to eternity but the eternal satiety of a meeting.
samabhavat samabhavat — the doubling is a seal: the chapter is closed. The road has been travelled: the first birth into the mother, the second into the world, the third in death; and above all three a fourth, which is none at all: the flight of the knower, who needs no fortresses any more. One chapter remains — with a direct question: who then is this Ātman whom we revere?
