The first of the four stages of haṭha-yoga is named — ārambha, "beginning"; and the four stages (beginning, pot, cultivation, completion) were discussed when reading the Varāha (5.72). It is worth noting the expression sampūrṇa-hṛdayaḥ śūnye, "with a full heart — in emptiness." This pairing is curious and, to my mind, deliberate: fullness and emptiness are set side by side.
The reading, apparently, is this: empty outside, full within; that is, in a person occupied with nothing from outside, the heart turns out to be full. Let us add what the Vaiṣṇava side says of such a pairing. It holds the same and expresses it through its own yukta-vairāgya: it is not the place from which things were removed that is empty, but the place where nothing was put.
And its argument, cited when reading the Varāha (5.43), repeats here: if one shuts and does not open, the result is anguish, not fullness. Let us add the word granthi, "knot," implied here: it says "having undone the second," and the second is the knot of Viṣṇu, of which the next verse will speak. Of the three knots — of Brahmā, of Viṣṇu, and of Rudra — it was said when reading the Varāha (5.65); let us repeat the main point: a knot is tied out of the very same rope that binds, that is, a person is bound by his own loops.
And let us repeat the conclusion from there: a knot is untied by what one has seen (Bhāgavatam 1.2.21), not by effort; a tight knot is drawn tighter by force.
