तद्धैके प्राजापत्यामेवेष्टिं कुर्वन्ति । तदु तथा न कुर्यादाग्नेयीमेव कुर्यात् । अग्निर्ह वै प्राणः प्राणमेव तथा करोति । पञ्चान्त्रैधातवीयामेव कुर्यात् । एतयैव त्रयो धातवो यदुत सत्त्वं रजस्तम इति । अयं ते योनिः ऋत्विजो यतो जातः अरोचथाः । तं जानन्नग्न आरोहाथा नो वर्धयरयिम् । इत्यनेन मन्त्रेणाग्निमाजिघ्रेत् । एष ह वा अग्नेर्योनिर्यः प्राणः प्राणं गच्छ स्वाहेत्येवमेवैतदाह

Some perform at this point the sacrifice to Prajāpati. But one should not do so: let him perform the sacrifice to Agni, for Agni is the breath, and thereby he performs it for the breath. Let him perform the three-element sacrifice — by it the three elements, namely clarity, passion and darkness. “Here is thy womb, O priests, whence born thou didst shine; knowing it, O Agni, ascend and increase our wealth” — with this mantra let him inhale the fire; for the womb of fire is the breath: “go to the breath, svāhā!”

The ritual portion: what to do on leaving the world.
The renouncer does not simply walk away — he performs a last sacrifice in which he gives up his fires. The book disputes those who offer it to Prajāpati and directs it to Agni.
The ground is given in four words: agnir ha vai prāṇaḥ — “for Agni is the breath”.
That is the whole meaning of the rite. The sacrificial fire the householder has tended for decades is not put out but taken within: it passes into the breath.
Hence the renouncer is later called “one whose fire has lapsed” — but the fire is not lost, it is transferred.
Then comes the traidhātavī, the “three-element sacrifice”, and it is at once explained that the three elements are the three guṇas: sattva, rajas, tamas.
What is offered up, then, is the whole fabric of nature out of which a man is woven.
The mantra quoted is from the Ṛgveda: “here is thy womb, whence born thou didst shine”. And to it is added the interpretation: the womb of fire is prāṇa.
Note the verb ājighret — “let him inhale, let him smell”. The fire is not quenched with water nor abandoned: it is drawn in.
