«Thus, not having performed the wearing of ash, let him not partake of water, nor food, nor anything else. From negligence having abandoned the wearing of ash, let him not repeat gāyatrī, let him not offer into the fire, let him not satisfy the gods, the sages, and the ancestors».

The rule is stated harshly: without the mark nothing is allowed — neither eating, nor drinking, nor praying, nor offering. Worth noting the structure of such a rule, for it occurs in every ritual tradition and has its own logic. Its meaning is this: the mark is the condition of admission. Until it is applied, a person is, as it were, out of place: he has not yet entered the state from which one performs.
This logic is not bad in itself and in everyday life everyone has it: one does not sit down to table without washing one's hands; one does not enter a house in dirty shoes. Ritual only carries it to strictness. But worth noting too what such strictness turns into if carried to its end. Here it is said: do not repeat gāyatrī if you have not applied the mark. That is, an external condition is placed above the prayer itself.
Here is exactly where the Vaishnava side parts ways decisively. Its rule runs the opposite way: the Name has no conditions. The Bhāgavatam says that the Name works whenever, wherever, and in whatever state it is uttered; and no absence of mark, purity, place, or hour cancels it.
The difference between these two orderings is not a trifle. Where conditions exist, there will always be someone who fails to meet them — and he will be cut off. Where there are no conditions, there is no one to cut off.
