अफलाकाङ्क्षिभिर्यज्ञो विधिदृष्टो य इज्यते ।
यष्टव्यमेवेति मनः समाधाय स सात्त्विकः ॥
Transliteration (IAST)
aphalākāṅkṣibhir yajño vidhi-dṛṣṭo ya ijyate |
yaṣṭavyam eveti manaḥ samādhāya sa sāttvikaḥ ||

अफलाकाङ्क्षिभिःa-phala-ākāṅkṣibhiḥby those who do not desire (ākāṅkṣibhiḥ) the fruits (phala).
यज्ञःyajñaḥsacrifice.
विधिदृष्टःvidhi-dṛṣṭaḥin accordance with the injunctions (vidhi) [of the scriptures].
यः इज्यतेyaḥ ijyatethat which is performed.
यष्टव्यम् एव इतिyaṣṭavyam eva iti“this ought to be done.”
मनः समाधायmanaḥ samādhāyahaving fixed (samādhāya) the mind (manaḥ).
सः सात्त्विकःsaḥ sāttvikaḥit (saḥ) is sāttvic.
Translation
“The sacrifice that is performed in accordance with the injunctions of the scriptures, without desire for its fruits, with the mind fixed on the thought ‘this is my duty’ — such a sacrifice belongs to the guṇa of goodness.”
