Translation

"Nonviolence, truthful speech, and forbearance (kṣamā) are the highest dharma of the brahmin, higher even than the keeping of the Vedas in memory. But the dharma of the kshatriya does not befit you here: the bearing of the rod of punishment, sternness, and the protection of subjects — such was the kshatriya's deed. Listen to me, then, O righteous Ruru: once Janamejaya carried out the slaughter of the serpents, but the deliverance of the terrified serpents came from a brahmin — from Āstīka, foremost of the twice-born, endowed with the power of austerity, versed in the Vedas and the Vedāṅgas — at the serpent sacrifice (sarpa-satra)."
