The outcome of the wager is bitter: Kadru's deceit (her serpent sons clinging to the tail) brings her an illusory victory, while truthful Vinata is left with slavery. Scripture thus shows that in the world of duality, falsehood often triumphs for a time while the righteous suffer. But this is only appearance, and only for a season: Vinata's bondage becomes the occasion for Garuda's great feat of freeing his mother — from misfortune a great deed is born. Here is a consoling law: the suffering of a devotee is neither fruitless nor eternal; the Lord turns even injustice toward the highest good. Vinata's sorrow and the deceiver's triumph are merely the opening knot, to be followed by deliverance. In the same way, a soul temporarily enslaved by the consequences of another's or its own deceit gains freedom through the appearance of a higher power — here embodied in her own son Garuda, the future bearer of the Lord.
