Suta said: “When they had departed, the son of Vinata, the branch [held] in his mouth, asked his father Kashyapa: ‘Lord, where shall I drop this branch of the tree? Tell me, lord, of a land where there are no brahmins.’ Then Kashyapa pointed out to him a mountain — uninhabited, with snow-bound caves, unreachable even in thought by others. Directing his mind to that mountain's vast recess, the bird Tarkshya (Garuda), with the branch, the elephant, and the tortoise, flew there swiftly. So great was that branch that not even a strap of a hundred [ox] hides could have girded it, the branch Garuda carried. And in no great time Garuda, best of fliers, covered a distance of a hundred thousand yojanas. Reaching that mountain in a single instant, at his father's word, the wanderer of the sky dropped the great branch there with a crash. Struck by the wind of his wings, that king of mountains trembled and poured down a rain of flowers, shedding its trees; and its peaks crumbled on every side, bright with gems and gold, adorning the great mountain all the more. Then, settling upon the peak of that mountain, the best of birds, Garuda, ate them both — the elephant and the tortoise.”
