The gods' preparation to defend the amrita reveals the futility of worldly might before a higher will. All the gods, led by Indra, in precious armor, with fearsome weapons, surround the nectar of immortality in a dense array — and all of this, as what follows will show, proves powerless against Garuda alone. Scripture thus prepares a lesson: no multitude and no armament can withstand one destined from above to accomplish a deed. Here it is revealed that human — and even divine — efforts to guard against the inevitable are fruitless when a higher will is at work; proud reliance on strength and weapons is self-deception. It is telling that the gods ‘purify themselves’ and ‘fix their minds’ — even for defense, concentration and purity are needed; yet even these will not save them, for Garuda carries within him a destiny granted by the power of ascetics and the will of the Lord. Thus the dazzling splendor of the heavenly host is but a brilliant backdrop before the manifestation of the true strength of a devotee, and all the greatness of the gods pales before one who acts under a higher design.
