Suta said: "At that very time the blessed goddess, daughter of Daksha, the fair Vinata, renowned, desiring a son, having performed austerity and kept her vow, having bathed and purified herself with the pumsavana rite, approached her husband. And Kashyapa said to her: 'Your desired undertaking, O goddess, will bear fruit: you will bear two heroic sons, lords of the three worlds. Born of the Valakhilyas' austerity and the power of my resolve, two greatly fortunate sons, honored by the worlds, will be born to you.' And again the lord, the son of Marichi, said to her: 'Bear carefully, without negligence, this fruit of great destiny. One of them will rule over all the winged creatures — a hero honored by the worlds, a wanderer of the sky, acting by his own will and might.' And the delighted Prajapati said to Shatakratu (Indra): 'These two bird-brothers will become your helpers; no harm will come to you from them. Let your distress be dispelled, O Shakra: you yourself will remain Indra. But henceforth do not insult those who speak of Brahman in this way, nor scorn them in pride — their words are venomous, and they are quick to wrath.' Thus addressed, Indra, reassured, went to heaven; and Vinata too, her purpose accomplished, rejoiced then. And she bore two sons, Aruna and Garuda. Of the two, Aruna was imperfectly formed and became the charioteer who goes before the Sun; and Garuda was consecrated as Indra (ruler) over the winged creatures. Listen now to his great deed, O descendant of Bhrigu."
