Here unfolds the horror of the snake sacrifice — the mass extermination of serpents. Scripture spares no vivid detail: ‘hundreds of thousands, millions’ perish, white and black, old and young, without distinction of guilt. The final word is notable: the serpents perish ‘tormented by the rod of their mother's curse’ — that is, by Kadru's ancient curse upon her own sons. Thus scripture links the present slaughter to that old curse: Janamejaya's sacrifice merely fulfills what the mother of serpents had foretold. Karma shows itself here in full force: wrath begets wrath across generations — Kadru's curse, then Shringin's curse, then Janamejaya's vengeance — a single chain of violence. And the very excess of the spectacle (the death of the young and innocent together with the guilty) cries out for mercy: just retribution against Takshaka alone has turned into the slaughter of an entire race. Thus scripture prepares the reader's heart for the coming of Astika, whose compassion will break this wheel of vengeance; for only compassion can halt what wrath has begotten.
