Here the king, having left his army and removed the royal insignia, enters the hermitage — and this act is deeply significant. Here is a model of humility before holiness: the mighty lord of the world ‘removes the royal insignia’ and goes to the sage as a simple petitioner, with only a minister and a priest. Before spiritual greatness worldly power lays down its regalia: for in the abode of God what matters is not rank but the soul. It is significant that the king, upon entering, at once ‘cast off hunger and thirst and was filled with joy’: the nearness of a holy place satisfies and consoles — where the worldly wasteland could not quench his need, the spiritual hermitage grants fullness. And the description of the hermitage, ‘shining like the world of Brahma,’ resounding with the Vedas (Rig, Atharva), reveals the ideal of the tapovana: a place where the sacred word ever sounds and the sacrificial fire blazes — heaven on earth. Thus the scripture exalts the austerity and learning of the brahmanas above the splendor of kings — and prepares the king’s meeting with Shakuntala in this holy place.
