‘The lord of men, drawing near to that [forest], like [the garden of] Chaitraratha, replete with excellences, indescribable in its splendor, [wished] to behold the great sage Kashyapa-Kanva, rich in austerity. He, having left at the forest gate his army — [full] of chariots, dense with horses, teeming with foot-soldiers — spoke thus: “I shall go to behold the passionless sage Kashyapa, rich in austerity; remain here until my return.” The lord of men, the king, having reached that forest, like [heavenly] Nandana, cast off his hunger and thirst and was filled with great joy. And the king, [taking with him only] his minister and his chaplain, having removed the royal insignia, made his way to the excellent hermitage, wishing to behold that sage, [like] an imperishable treasury of austerity. He, having surveyed the hermitage resembling the world of Brahma, resounding with the humming of bees, [full] of many flocks of birds — that tiger among men heard the hymns of the Rigveda, recited by the foremost knowers of the Rig in [due] sequence of words, amid rites being performed. By knowers of the science of sacrifice and its parts, [skilled] in [proper] sequence, [men] of boundless spirit, self-controlled, that hermitage then shone. And with other twice-born, foremost in the Atharvaveda, honored by the community of priests, chanting the samhita, [perfected] in sound and [grammatical] structure, [with] sequence of words, resounding, that glorious hermitage shone, [as if] the world of Brahma.’
