Translation

Vidura said: "O Ajatashatru, Dhritarashtra received and honored me, saying: 'In this state of affairs, having settled into impartiality, tell what is beneficial for them and for me.' I told him what was proper for the Kauravas and beneficial for Dhritarashtra. But that beneficial counsel did not enter his mind; nor do I see any other proper course. I spoke the highest good for the Pandavas, but the son of Ambika did not hear me. As a sick man does not like beneficial food, so he did not like what was said. Ajatashatru, he is not led toward the good — like a corrupted wife in the house of a learned brahmin; my words were no more pleasing to the best of the Bharatas than a sixty-year-old husband is to a young maiden. The ruin of the Kauravas is certain: Dhritarashtra does not move toward the good. As water poured on a lotus leaf does not remain, so beneficial words do not remain in him. Growing angry, Dhritarashtra said to me: 'Wherever your faith lies, O Bharata, go there. I no longer wish to have you as a helper in governing the land or the city.' Cast off by him, O king, I came in haste to instruct you. Keep in mind all that I said in the assembly, and now hear more."
