एतेषु हि नरव्याघ्र जीवत्सु न कथं चन ॥
शक्यः शूरसुतो हन्तुम् अपि वज्रभृता स्वयम् ॥
हतः शूरसुतो व्यक्तं व्यक्तं ते च परासवः ॥
बलदेवमुखाः सर्वे इति मे निश्चिता मतिः ॥
सो ऽहं सर्वविनाशं तं चिन्तयानो मुहुर् मुहुः ॥
सुविह्वलो महाराज पुनः शाल्वम् अयोधयम् ॥
ततो ऽपश्यं महाराज प्रपतन्तम् अहं तदा ॥
सौभाच् छूरसुतं वीर ततो मां मोह आविशत् ॥
तस्य रूपं प्रपततः पितुर् मम नराधिप ॥
ययातेः क्षीणपुण्यस्य स्वर्गाद् इव महीतलम् ॥
विशीर्णगलितोष्णीषः प्रकीर्णाम्बरमूर्धजः ॥
प्रपतन् दृश्यते ह स्म क्षीणपुण्य इव ग्रहः ॥
ततः शार्ङ्गं धनुःश्रेष्ठं करात् प्रपतितं मम ॥
मोहात् सन्नश् च कौन्तेय रथोपस्थ उपाविशम् ॥
ततो हाहाकृतं सर्वं सैन्यं मे गतचेतनम् ॥
मां दृष्ट्वा रथनीडस्थं गतासुम् इव भारत ॥
प्रसार्य बाहू पततः प्रसार्य चरणाव् अपि ॥
रूपं पितुर् अपश्यं तच् छकुनेः पततो यथा ॥
तं पतन्तं महाबाहो शूलपट्टिशपाणयः ॥
अभिघ्नन्तो भृशं वीरा मम चेतो व्यकम्पयन् ॥
ततो मुहूर्तात् प्रतिलभ्य संज्ञाम्; अहं तदा वीर महाविमर्दे ॥
न तत्र सौभं न रिपुं न शाल्वं; पश्यामि वृद्धं पितरं न चापि ॥
ततो ममासीन् मनसि मायेयम् इति निश्चितम् ॥
प्रबुद्धो ऽस्मि ततो भूयः शतशो विकिरञ् शरान् ॥

eteṣu hi naravyāghra jīvatsu na kathaṃ cana ||
śakyaḥ śūrasuto hantum api vajrabhṛtā svayam ||
hataḥ śūrasuto vyaktaṃ vyaktaṃ te ca parāsavaḥ ||
baladevamukhāḥ sarve iti me niścitā matiḥ ||
so 'haṃ sarvavināśaṃ taṃ cintayāno muhur muhuḥ ||
suvihvalo mahārāja punaḥ śālvam ayodhayam ||
tato 'paśyaṃ mahārāja prapatantam ahaṃ tadā ||
saubhāc chūrasutaṃ vīra tato māṃ moha āviśat ||
tasya rūpaṃ prapatataḥ pitur mama narādhipa ||
yayāteḥ kṣīṇapuṇyasya svargād iva mahītalam ||
viśīrṇagalitoṣṇīṣaḥ prakīrṇāmbaramūrdhajaḥ ||
prapatan dṛśyate ha sma kṣīṇapuṇya iva grahaḥ ||
tataḥ śārṅgaṃ dhanuḥśreṣṭhaṃ karāt prapatitaṃ mama ||
mohāt sannaś ca kaunteya rathopastha upāviśam ||
tato hāhākṛtaṃ sarvaṃ sainyaṃ me gatacetanam ||
māṃ dṛṣṭvā rathanīḍasthaṃ gatāsum iva bhārata ||
prasārya bāhū patataḥ prasārya caraṇāv api ||
rūpaṃ pitur apaśyaṃ tac chakuneḥ patato yathā ||
taṃ patantaṃ mahābāho śūlapaṭṭiśapāṇayaḥ ||
abhighnanto bhṛśaṃ vīrā mama ceto vyakampayan ||
tato muhūrtāt pratilabhya saṃjñām; ahaṃ tadā vīra mahāvimarde ||
na tatra saubhaṃ na ripuṃ na śālvaṃ; paśyāmi vṛddhaṃ pitaraṃ na cāpi ||
tato mamāsīn manasi māyeyam iti niścitam ||
prabuddho 'smi tato bhūyaḥ śataśo vikirañ śarān ||

ततः अपश्यम् महाराज प्रपतन्तम् अहम् तदा सौभात् शूरसुतम् वीर ततः माम् मोहः आविशत्tataḥ apaśyam mahārāja prapatantam aham tadā saubhāt śūrasutam vīra tataḥ mām mohaḥ āviśatthen, O great king, I saw the son of Shura falling from Saubha, O hero, and bewilderment overcame me
तस्य रूपम् प्रपततः पितुः मम नराधिप ययातेः क्षीणपुण्यस्य स्वर्गात् इव महीतलम्tasya rūpam prapatataḥ pituḥ mama narādhipa yayāteḥ kṣīṇapuṇyasya svargāt iva mahītalamthe form of my father, falling, O lord of men, was like Yayati, his merit exhausted, falling from heaven to the surface of the earth
विशीर्णगलितोष्णीषः प्रकीर्णाम्बरमूर्धजः प्रपतन् दृश्यते ह स्म क्षीणपुण्यः इव ग्रहःviśīrṇagalitoṣṇīṣaḥ prakīrṇāmbaramūrdhajaḥ prapatan dṛśyate ha sma kṣīṇapuṇyaḥ iva grahaḥwith his turban unravelled and slipping, his garments and hair scattered, falling, he appeared like a planet whose merit is exhausted
ततः शार्ङ्गम् धनुःश्रेष्ठम् करात् प्रपतितम् मम मोहात् सन्नः च कौन्तेय रथोपस्थे उपाविशम्tataḥ śārṅgam dhanuḥśreṣṭham karāt prapatitam mama mohāt sannaḥ ca kaunteya rathopasthe upāviśamthen Sharnga, the best of bows, fell from my hand, and, undone by bewilderment, I sank down and sat on the chariot's seat, O Kaunteya

Translation

"I thought: as long as Baladeva, Satyaki and Pradyumna are alive, not even Indra could slay my father; so if he is slain, all of them must have perished too. With this thought I fought Shalva again, but suddenly I saw my father falling from Saubha. He seemed like Yayati, falling from heaven to earth once his merit was spent; his turban had come undone, his garments and hair streaming. Sharnga fell from my hand, and I sank onto the chariot as if lifeless. The army cried out. I watched warriors with spears and pikes striking him as he fell. But a moment later, regaining my senses, I saw neither Saubha, nor Shalva, nor my father. Then I understood: this is maya. Awakening, I once again began scattering hundreds of arrows."
