देवा ऊचुः
नहुषेणाभितप्तानां त्वं लोकानां गतिः पुरा ॥
भ्रंशितश् च सुरैश्वर्याल् लोकार्थं लोककण्टकः ॥
क्रोधात् प्रवृद्धः सहसा भास्करस्य नगोत्तमः ॥
वचस् तवानतिक्रामन् विन्ध्यः शैलो न वर्धते ॥
तमसा चावृते लोके मृत्युनाभ्यर्दिताः प्रजाः ॥
त्वाम् एव नाथम् आसाद्य निर्वृतिं परमां गताः ॥
अस्माकं भयभीतानां नित्यशो भगवान् गतिः ॥
ततस् त्व् आर्ताः प्रयाचामस् त्वां वरं वरदो ह्य् असि ॥

bhraṃśitaś ca suraiśvaryāl lokārthaṃ lokakaṇṭakaḥ ||
krodhāt pravṛddhaḥ sahasā bhāskarasya nagottamaḥ ||
vacas tavānatikrāman vindhyaḥ śailo na vardhate ||
tamasā cāvṛte loke mṛtyunābhyarditāḥ prajāḥ ||
tvām eva nātham āsādya nirvṛtiṃ paramāṃ gatāḥ ||
asmākaṃ bhayabhītānāṃ nityaśo bhagavān gatiḥ ||
tatas tv ārtāḥ prayācāmas tvāṃ varaṃ varado hy asi ||
The gods said: "Formerly, when the worlds were tormented by Nahusha, you became their refuge; for the good of the world, this enemy of the world was cast down from divine dominion. When the best of mountains, Vindhya, suddenly grew from anger against the sun, it ceased to grow further, not transgressing your word. When the world was covered in darkness and beings oppressed by death, they, finding in you a protector, attained supreme peace. For us, ever seized by fear, the blessed one is always our refuge. Therefore we, afflicted, ask a boon of you: for you are the giver of boons."
