When the marriage had been performed, O king, the best of the Bhrigus came to him with his wife, saw his son, and rejoiced. Husband and wife honored the seated guru, revered by hosts of gods, and, folding their palms, sat down beside him. Then the blessed Bhrigu, pleased, said to his daughter-in-law: "Choose a boon, fortunate one; I will grant you what you desire." She sought to please the guru for the sake of a son for herself and for her mother, and he granted the favor. Bhrigu said: "At the ritual time, after bathing, for the sake of begetting a son, you and your mother shall embrace different trees: you the ashvattha, and she the udumbara." But in the embrace, O king, they did the opposite. After some time Bhrigu came and learned of this reversal. The greatly radiant one said to his daughter-in-law Satyavati: "A brahmin with the conduct of a kshatriya will be born to you; to your mother a great kshatriya with the conduct of a brahmin will be born, of great might, set upon the path of the virtuous." Then she pleaded with her father-in-law again and again: "Let it not be my son who is such; let it rather be my grandson." "So be it," he answered her, O Pandava. In due time she gave birth to a son, Jamadagni, descendant of the Bhrigus, endowed with radiance and splendor. Growing in splendor, Jamadagni surpassed many great sages through his study of the Vedas, O Pandava. The whole science of archery and the four kinds of weapons came to him, radiant as the sun.

The mistake with the trees shows how closely nature, vow, and destiny intertwine. Satyavati's plea shifts the formidable kshatriya power onto her grandson — the future Parashurama.
