Vaishampayana said: 'While the great-souled Pandavas dwelt upon this finest of mountains, keeping their noble vows, joy and hope sustained them: they awaited the coming of Arjuna. To these heroes, pure of heart, radiant, steadfast in truth and courage, the gandharvas and great sages came with love. On the mountain they saw flowering peaks and slopes, heard the cries of peacocks and swans, saw lakes fashioned by Kubera himself, with sealed banks, full of lotuses, kadambas, karandavas, and geese. They saw rich pleasure-grounds worthy of King Dhanada, beautiful jeweled terraces, fragrant trees of many colors, rows of clouds above the peaks. From the mountain's own radiance and the power of the great herbs, day and night there were scarcely distinguishable. Standing on that peak, they watched the sunrise and sunset, its emergence from darkness and its passing into darkness, its rays scattering the quarters of the sky. They were occupied with sacred study and constant rites, holding to dharma, pure vows, and truth, awaiting the arrival of the great charioteer faithful to his vow. "Let our joy be here, when Dhananjaya, having mastered the weapons, swiftly returns to us" — so they said, growing ever more devoted to austerity and yoga. But, constantly thinking of Kiritin, seeing the wondrous forests on the mountain, they experienced night and day as though a whole year. From the day when Jishnu, by Yudhishthira's command, departed from Kamyaka in search of weapons, joy had left them; the month passed with difficulty for the Bharatas on that mountain.'

Arjuna's absence is shown here as a spiritual discipline, not mere impatience. The Pandavas dwell amid Kubera's beauty, yet their hearts remain with their brother and with the shared task of restoring dharma.
