At dawn Karna Vaikartana, as though smiling, and with palms joined, spoke sensible words to Duryodhana: "The dead do not conquer their enemies; the living see good fortune. What good, O Kaurava, comes to the dead? What victory? This is no time for despondency, fear, or death." The mighty-armed one embraced him with his arms and said: "Rise, O king. Why do you lie here? Why do you grieve, O crusher of foes? How can you, who have scorched your enemies with your valor, wish for death? Or has fear seized you at the sight of Arjuna's feat? I promise you truly: I shall slay Arjuna in battle. When the thirteenth year has passed, taking up arms in the name of truth, I shall bring the sons of Pritha under your sway, O lord of men." What Karna had said, together with the words of the daityas and the homage of the others, raised Suyodhana up. Hearing the words of the daityas, he confirmed the resolve in his heart. Then that tiger among men marshaled his army, filled with chariots, elephants, horses, and foot soldiers. This great host moved forth, O king, like a stream of the Ganga, with white parasols, banners, and snow-white chamaras. It shone, exceedingly dense with chariots, elephants, and foot soldiers, like the sky in a clear autumn when the massed clouds have departed. Praised by the foremost of the twice-born with blessings for victory, receiving their joined palms as garlands, the son of Dhritarashtra, Suyodhana, lord of men, went at the front, blazing with the highest Shri, together with Karna and Saubala. All his brothers headed by Duhshasana, Bhurishravas, Somadatta, and the great King Bahlika -- these bearers of the Kuru line -- followed this lion among kings, who rode upon various chariots, horses, and the finest elephants. In a short while, O king, they entered their own city.

Karna makes a vow that will become one of the axes of the coming war. After the subterranean exhortation, Duryodhana returns not purified, but only more hardened in enmity.
