मार्कण्डेय उवाच
ततः प्रहस्तः सहसा समभ्येत्य विभीषणम् ॥
गदया ताडयाम् आस विनद्य रणकर्कशः ॥
स तयाभिहतो धीमान् गदया भीमवेगया ॥
नाकम्पत महाबाहुर् हिमवान् इव सुस्थिरः ॥
ततः प्रगृह्य विपुलां शतघण्टां विभीषणः ॥
अभिमन्त्र्य महाशक्तिं चिक्षेपास्य शिरः प्रति ॥
पतन्त्या स तया वेगाद् राक्षसो ऽशनिनादया ॥
हृतोत्तमाङ्गो ददृशे वातरुग्ण इव द्रुमः ॥
mārkaṇḍeya uvāca
tataḥ prahastaḥ sahasā samabhyetya vibhīṣaṇam ||
gadayā tāḍayām āsa vinadya raṇakarkaśaḥ ||
sa tayābhihato dhīmān gadayā bhīmavegayā ||
nākampata mahābāhur himavān iva susthiraḥ ||
tataḥ pragṛhya vipulāṃ śataghaṇṭāṃ vibhīṣaṇaḥ ||
abhimantrya mahāśaktiṃ cikṣepāsya śiraḥ prati ||
patantyā sa tayā vegād rākṣaso 'śaninādayā ||
hṛtottamāṅgo dadṛśe vātarugṇa iva drumaḥ ||
Prahasta suddenly attacked Vibhishana and struck him with his mace, roaring in battle. But Vibhishana, struck by the terrible mace, did not waver, like the steadfast Himalaya. He took up a great shakti hung with a hundred bells, consecrated it with a mantra, and hurled it at Prahasta's head. The rakshasa, struck by that lightning-like shakti, was deprived of his head and became like a tree broken by the wind.
