सावित्री त्व् आह भर्तारं नैकस् त्वं गन्तुम् अर्हसि ॥
सह त्वयागमिष्यामि न हि त्वां हातुम् उत्सहे ॥
सत्यवान् उवाच
वनं न गतपूर्वं ते दुःखः पन्थाश् च भामिनि ॥
व्रतोपवासक्षामा च कथं पद्भ्यां गमिष्यसि ॥
सावित्र्य् उवाच
उपवासान् न मे ग्लानिर् नास्ति चापि परिश्रमः ॥
गमने च कृतोत्साहां प्रतिषेद्धुं न मार्हसि ॥
सत्यवान् उवाच
यदि ते गमनोत्साहः करिष्यामि तव प्रियम् ॥
मम त्व् आमन्त्रय गुरून् न मां दोषः स्पृशेद् अयम् ॥
मार्कण्डेय उवाच
साभिगम्याब्रवीच् छ्वश्रूं श्वशुरं च महाव्रता ॥
अयं गच्छति मे भर्ता फलाहारो महावनम् ॥
इच्छेयम् अभ्यनुज्ञातुम् आर्यया श्वशुरेण च ॥
अनेन सह निर्गन्तुं न हि मे विरहः क्षमः ॥
गुर्वग्निहोत्रार्थकृते प्रस्थितश् च सुतस् तव ॥
न निवार्यो निवार्यः स्याद् अन्यथा प्रस्थितो वनम् ॥
संवत्सरः किं चिद् ऊनो न निष्क्रान्ताहम् आश्रमात् ॥
वनं कुसुमितं द्रष्टुं परं कौतूहलं हि मे ॥
द्युमत्सेन उवाच
यतः प्रभृति सावित्री पित्रा दत्ता स्नुषा मम ॥
नानयाभ्यर्थनायुक्तम् उक्तपूर्वं स्मराम्य् अहम् ॥
तद् एषा लभतां कामं यथाभिलषितं वधूः ॥
अप्रमादश् च कर्तव्यः पुत्रि सत्यवतः पथि ॥

Translation

Savitri said to her husband: "You should not go alone. I will go with you; I cannot bear to leave you." Satyavan answered: "You have never gone into the forest before, the path is hard, and you are weakened by the vow and the fast. How will you go on foot?" Savitri said: "From fasting I feel no weakness and no fatigue. I am resolved to go; do not forbid me." Satyavan agreed to do as she wished, but asked her to seek the elders' permission, so that no fault would fall upon him. Then Savitri went to her mother-in-law and father-in-law: "My husband is going to the great forest for fruit. I wish, with your leave, to go out together with him; separation from him is more than I can bear. Your son is going for the sake of the teachers' agnihotra and must not be stopped. I have not left the hermitage for nearly a year, and I long greatly to see the flowering forest." Dyumatsena said: "Ever since Savitri was given to me by her father as a daughter-in-law, I do not recall her ever making a request before. So let her have what she desires, but be watchful, daughter, on Satyavan's path."

Commentary

Savitri's request appears simple, yet it holds the whole of her resolve: she will not leave her husband in the hour known to her alone.
