Karna asked: "Who are you, that speaks to me thus, showing the highest friendship? Tell me, blessed one, who you are in the form of a twice-born?" The brahmin answered: "I am the thousand-rayed one. Out of friendship I reveal this to you. Fulfill my word: this is your highest good." Karna said: "It is already the highest good for me that the very lord of cattle, seeking my welfare, speaks with me. But I beg you: do not hold me back from this vow, if I am dear to you. The whole world knows my vow: I will give even my life to the best brahmins and will not refuse. If Shakra, in the guise of a brahmin, comes to beg the earrings and the finest armor for the sake of the Pandavas, I will give them up, so that my glory, known in the three worlds, may not perish. For one such as I, the protection of life is shameful; a death joined with glory is approved by the world. If Vritrahan comes to beg my earrings for the sake of the Pandavas, this will bring glory to me and disgrace to him. I choose glory even at the cost of life, radiant one. The glorious one partakes of heaven, the one without glory perishes. Glory revives a man as a mother does; disgrace kills the living. An ancient verse says: glory is a man's life; in the other world it is the highest refuge. Having given up the gifts born with the body, I will gain eternal glory. In battle, having done a difficult deed, whether victorious over my enemies or fallen, I will gain glory alone. Having granted fearlessness to the frightened, having freed the old, the children, and the twice-born from great fear, I will attain the highest glory. Therefore, having given Maghavan this unsurpassed alms in the guise of a brahmin, I shall go to the highest goal."

Karna stands firm in his vow of giving, but his speech reveals a tragic substitution: glory becomes almost an absolute. Generosity is great, yet without the highest discernment it can serve fate rather than liberation.
