Dhritarashtra said: 'No doubt, Sanjaya, having seen these mighty chariot-warriors, the sons of Kunti, filled his mind with great anxiety on account of these tigers among men.' Vaishampayana continued: 'Having regained his senses and grown calm, Sanjaya addressed King Dhritarashtra in the midst of the assembly of the Kurus in that hall, saying: "Indeed, O king of kings, I have seen these great warriors, the sons of Kunti, grown thin in body from the privations in which they lived at the court of King Matsya. Hear, O king, with whom the Pandavas will fight against you."'

This passage (5.50.16-20) develops the central theme of the Udyoga-parva: the effort toward peace unfolds against the backdrop of an already inevitable war. Key themes: the Pandavas, Sanjaya. Dharma here reveals itself through speech, the choice of embassy, faithfulness to promises, and the responsibility of kings for the consequences of their decisions.
