स तन् न ममृषे राजन् पाण्डवेयस्य विक्रमम् ॥
अथैनं सप्तसप्तत्या नाराचानां समार्पयत् ॥
तस्यार्जुनो धनुश् छित्त्वा शरावापं निकृत्य च ॥
आजघानोरसि क्रुद्धः सप्तभिर् नतपर्वभिः ॥
अथान्यद् धनुर् आदाय स राजा क्रोधमूर्छितः ॥
वासविं नवभिर् बाणैर् बाह्वोर् उरसि चार्पयत् ॥
sa tan na mamṛṣe rājan pāṇḍaveyasya vikramam ||
athainaṃ saptasaptatyā nārācānāṃ samārpayat ||
tasyārjuno dhanuś chittvā śarāvāpaṃ nikṛtya ca ||
ājaghānorasi kruddhaḥ saptabhir nataparvabhiḥ ||
athānyad dhanur ādāya sa rājā krodhamūrchitaḥ ||
vāsaviṃ navabhir bāṇair bāhvor urasi cārpayat ||
He could not bear that, O king -- the valor of the son of Pandu -- and then pierced him with seventy-seven iron arrows. Arjuna, having cut his bow and severed his quiver, struck him in the chest, enraged, with seven smooth-jointed arrows. Then, taking up another bow, that king, maddened with rage, struck the son of Vasava with nine arrows in the arms and chest.

Shrutayudha "na mamṛṣe... vikramam", cannot bear Arjuna's valor -- wrath and wounded pride drive him on. "Krodhamūrchitaḥ", maddened with rage, he fights ever more fiercely. It is telling that fury blinds him to the covenant of Varuna, which will soon be his own undoing. The verse teaches that anger blinds a man to his own peril: growing heated, he forgets the terms on which his strength stands; and Shrutayudha, mad with rage, moves toward the fatal breach he will bring upon himself.
