व्यसृजन्त शरौघांस् ते पाण्डवं प्रति पार्थिवाः ॥
न चाव्यथत धर्मात्मा वासविः परवीरहा ॥
स तानि शरजालानि गदाः प्रासांश् च वीर्यवान् ॥
आगतान् अग्रसत् पार्थः सरितः सागरो यथा ॥
अस्त्रवेगेन महता पार्थो बाहुबलेन च ॥
सर्वेषां पार्थिवेन्द्राणाम् अग्रसत् ताञ् शरोत्तमान् ॥
vyasṛjanta śaraughāṃs te pāṇḍavaṃ prati pārthivāḥ ||
na cāvyathata dharmātmā vāsaviḥ paravīrahā ||
sa tāni śarajālāni gadāḥ prāsāṃś ca vīryavān ||
āgatān agrasat pārthaḥ saritaḥ sāgaro yathā ||
astravegena mahatā pārtho bāhubalena ca ||
sarveṣāṃ pārthivendrāṇām agrasat tāñ śarottamān ||
The kings hurled streams of arrows at the Pandava; and he, righteous of soul, the son of Vasava, slayer of enemy heroes, did not waver. He, the valiant one, swallowed those nets of arrows, maces and spears, as they came flying — Partha, as the ocean swallows rivers. By the great speed of his weapons and by the strength of his arms, Partha swallowed those finest arrows of all the lords of kings.

The image 'saritaḥ sāgaraḥ yathā,' 'as the ocean [receives] rivers': Arjuna absorbs every stream of arrows without overflowing, as the ocean takes in rivers while remaining calm. It is telling that 'na avyathata dharmātmā,' the righteous soul did not waver. The verse teaches that a righteous spirit is like the ocean: it absorbs every onslaught of misfortune without overflowing the banks of its calm; and as the sea does not swell from rivers, so the firm in spirit is not shaken by blows heaped upon him — for his capacity is boundless, like the Lord upon whom he leans.
