श्रुतं ते गदतो वाक्यं सर्वम् एतन् मयाच्युत ॥
न्याययुक्तं च चित्रं च फल्गुनार्थे यशस्करम् ॥
एवंविधे तथा काले मदृशं प्रेक्ष्य संमतम् ॥
वक्तुम् अर्हसि राजेन्द्र यथा पार्थं तथैव माम् ॥
न मे धनंजयस्यार्थे प्राणा रक्ष्याः कथं चन ॥
त्वत्प्रयुक्तः पुनर् अहं किं न कुर्यां महाहवे ॥
śrutaṃ te gadato vākyaṃ sarvam etan mayācyuta ||
nyāyayuktaṃ ca citraṃ ca phalgunārthe yaśaskaram ||
evaṃvidhe tathā kāle madṛśaṃ prekṣya saṃmatam ||
vaktum arhasi rājendra yathā pārthaṃ tathaiva mām ||
na me dhanaṃjayasyārthe prāṇā rakṣyāḥ kathaṃ cana ||
tvatprayuktaḥ punar ahaṃ kiṃ na kuryāṃ mahāhave ||
I have heard all this speech of yours, O unwavering one — just and wondrous, bringing glory for Phalguna's sake. At such a time, O lord of kings, looking upon one like me as trusted, you may say to me what you said to Partha. I must not guard my life in any way for Dhananjaya's sake; and sent by you, what would I not do in the great battle?

Satyaki answers love with love: 'na me… prāṇā rakṣyāḥ' — he will not guard his own life for his friend's sake. It is significant that he accepts the task before voicing his misgivings: devotion answers before calculation. The verse teaches that a true friend gives his heart first, and only then weighs the circumstances; readiness to lay down one's life for the beloved precedes all reasoning, for love does not bargain over terms before consenting.
