संजय उवाच
आत्मापराधात् संभूतं व्यसनं भरतर्षभ ॥
प्राप्य प्राकृतवद् वीर न त्वं शोचितुम् अर्हसि ॥
तव निर्गुणतां ज्ञात्वा पक्षपातं सुतेषु च ॥
द्वैधीभावं तथा धर्मे पाण्डवेषु च मत्सरम् ॥
आर्तप्रलापांश् च बहून् मनुजाधिपसत्तम ॥
सर्वलोकस्य तत्त्वज्ञः सर्वलोकगुरुः प्रभुः ॥
वासुदेवस् ततो युद्धं कुरूणाम् अकरोन् महत् ॥
saṃjaya uvāca
ātmāparādhāt saṃbhūtaṃ vyasanaṃ bharatarṣabha ||
prāpya prākṛtavad vīra na tvaṃ śocitum arhasi ||
tava nirguṇatāṃ jñātvā pakṣapātaṃ suteṣu ca ||
dvaidhībhāvaṃ tathā dharme pāṇḍaveṣu ca matsaram ||
ārtapralāpāṃś ca bahūn manujādhipasattama ||
sarvalokasya tattvajñaḥ sarvalokaguruḥ prabhuḥ ||
vāsudevas tato yuddhaṃ kurūṇām akaron mahat ||
"Meeting the calamity arisen [from] your own fault, O bull [among] the Bharatas, you must not grieve like a commoner, O hero. Knowing your worthlessness, and your partiality [toward] your sons, and likewise your duplicity in dharma and your envy [toward] the Pandavas, Vasudeva, knower of the truth of the whole world, teacher of the whole world, the lord, then wrought a great battle among the Kurus."

Sanjaya points to the root cause: the calamity "ātmāparādhāt saṃbhūtam," born of the king's own fault -- his "pakṣapāta, dvaidhībhāva, matsara," partiality, double-mindedness, envy. And it was the war itself that "sarvalokaguruḥ prabhuḥ," the lord-teacher of the world Vasudeva, allowed to unfold, answering this iniquity. It is significant that the Lord orders events in response to human wrongdoing. The verse teaches that the fruits of our deeds return to us by a higher ordinance: where partiality and envy take hold, there the Lord Himself sets the forces of retribution in motion, and to grieve over this is simply to fail to recognize one's own fault.
