एतस्मिन्न् एव काले तु त्वरमाणा महारथाः ॥
विव्यधुः सायकैर् गाढं कृतवर्माणम् आहवे ॥
अथान्यद् धनुर् आदाय त्यक्त्वा तच् च महद् धनुः ॥
विशीर्णं भरतश्रेष्ठ हार्दिक्यः परवीरहा ॥
विव्याध पाण्डवान् युद्धे त्रिभिस् त्रिभिर् अजिह्मगैः ॥
शिखण्डिनं च विव्याध त्रिभिः पञ्चभिर् एव च ॥
etasminn eva kāle tu tvaramāṇā mahārathāḥ ||
vivyadhuḥ sāyakair gāḍhaṃ kṛtavarmāṇam āhave ||
athānyad dhanur ādāya tyaktvā tac ca mahad dhanuḥ ||
viśīrṇaṃ bharataśreṣṭha hārdikyaḥ paravīrahā ||
vivyādha pāṇḍavān yuddhe tribhis tribhir ajihmagaiḥ ||
śikhaṇḍinaṃ ca vivyādha tribhiḥ pañcabhir eva ca ||
[At] this very time the hastening great warriors pierced Kritavarman deeply with arrows [in] battle. Then, having taken another bow and abandoned that great bow, shattered, O best of the Bharatas, the son of Hridika, slayer of enemy heroes, pierced the Pandavas in battle with three straight-flying [arrows] each, and pierced Shikhandin with three and then with five.

Kritavarman, having lost his bow, at once takes up another and continues to strike: his tirelessness gives the enemy no respite. It is significant that even under deep wounds he does not leave the fight. The verse teaches that steadfastness is measured by the ability to go on despite loss: whoever, wounded and disarmed, takes up the task again shows a firmness of spirit that neither wounds nor the loss of weapons can break.
