ततः क्रुद्धस् त्रिभिर् बाणैर् भीमसेनं हसन्न् इव ॥
अभिहत्य दृढं युद्धे तान् सर्वान् प्रत्यविध्यत ॥
त्रिभिस् त्रिभिर् महेष्वासो यतमानान् महारथान् ॥
ते ऽपि तं प्रत्यविध्यन्त सप्तभिः सप्तभिः शरैः ॥
शिखण्डिनस् ततः क्रुद्धः क्षुरप्रेण महारथः ॥
धनुश् चिच्छेद समरे प्रहसन्न् इव भारत ॥
tataḥ kruddhas tribhir bāṇair bhīmasenaṃ hasann iva ||
abhihatya dṛḍhaṃ yuddhe tān sarvān pratyavidhyata ||
tribhis tribhir maheṣvāso yatamānān mahārathān ||
te 'pi taṃ pratyavidhyanta saptabhiḥ saptabhiḥ śaraiḥ ||
śikhaṇḍinas tataḥ kruddhaḥ kṣurapreṇa mahārathaḥ ||
dhanuś ciccheda samare prahasann iva bhārata ||
Then, enraged, with three arrows, as if laughing, having struck Bhimasena hard in battle, [Kritavarman] pierced them all in return -- with three each, the great archer, [those] striving great warriors. They too pierced him in return with seven arrows each. Then the great warrior [Kritavarman], enraged, cut Shikhandin's bow in battle with a razor-tipped [arrow], as if laughing, O Bharata.

"Hasan iva... prahasan iva" -- Kritavarman fights with a smile, answering many playfully: the calm ease of a master amid a heavy fray. It is significant that his valor does not dim under the common assault. The verse teaches that one who has mastered his art keeps his composure even alone against many: where others strain and fear, the master smiles -- not out of contempt, but out of a gathered stillness that is itself his invincibility.
