एतद् व्रतं महाबाहो त्वया सह कृतं मया ॥
यथैतन् मम कौन्तेय तथा तव न संशयः ॥
तद्वधाय नरश्रेष्ठ स्मरैतद् वचनं मम ॥
यथा भवति तत् सत्यं तथा कुरु धनंजय ॥
तच् छ्रुत्वा वचनं तस्य भीमस्यामितविक्रमः ॥
ततो ऽर्जुनो ऽब्रवीत् कर्णं किं चिद् अभ्येत्य संयुगे ॥
etad vrataṃ mahābāho tvayā saha kṛtaṃ mayā ||
yathaitan mama kaunteya tathā tava na saṃśayaḥ ||
tadvadhāya naraśreṣṭha smaraitad vacanaṃ mama ||
yathā bhavati tat satyaṃ tathā kuru dhanaṃjaya ||
tac chrutvā vacanaṃ tasya bhīmasyāmitavikramaḥ ||
tato 'rjuno 'bravīt karṇaṃ kiṃ cid abhyetya saṃyuge ||
"This vow, o mighty-armed one, was made by me together with you; as this is mine, Kaunteya, so too is it yours, without doubt. For his slaying, best of men, remember this my word; so that it become true, so act, Dhananjaya." Having heard that word of his, Arjuna, of immeasurable valor, then, drawing somewhat near in the clash, spoke to Karna.

The brothers share a vow: what one has promised becomes the duty of the other as well. It is telling that Bhima cares not only for vengeance, but that the word be fulfilled — "that it become true." The verse teaches that within a harmonious brotherhood, one man's vow binds them all; and concern for the truthfulness of a given word, shared among kin, is stronger than any oath, for behind it stands not one man alone but the whole union of those who love.
