तस्मिन्न् आकुलसंग्रामे वर्तमाने महाभये ॥
मन्दरश्मिः सहस्रांशुर् अस्तं गिरिम् उपागमत् ॥
ततो राजन् हृषीकेशः संग्रामशिरसि स्थितम् ॥
तीर्णप्रतिज्ञं बीभत्सुं परिष्वज्येदम् अब्रवीत् ॥
दिष्ट्या संपादिता जिष्णो प्रतिज्ञा महती त्वया ॥
दिष्ट्या च निहतः पापो वृद्धक्षत्रः सहात्मजः ॥
धार्तराष्ट्रबलं प्राप्य देवसेनापि भारत ॥
सीदेत समरे जिष्णो नात्र कार्या विचारणा ॥
tasminn ākulasaṃgrāme vartamāne mahābhaye ||
mandaraśmiḥ sahasrāṃśur astaṃ girim upāgamat ||
tato rājan hṛṣīkeśaḥ saṃgrāmaśirasi sthitam ||
tīrṇapratijñaṃ bībhatsuṃ pariṣvajyedam abravīt ||
diṣṭyā saṃpāditā jiṣṇo pratijñā mahatī tvayā ||
diṣṭyā ca nihataḥ pāpo vṛddhakṣatraḥ sahātmajaḥ ||
dhārtarāṣṭrabalaṃ prāpya devasenāpi bhārata ||
sīdeta samare jiṣṇo nātra kāryā vicāraṇā ||
In that turbulent battle, most dreadful, which had been raging, the thousand-rayed [sun], its rays grown faint, reached the mountain of the sunset. Then, o king, Hrishikesha, embracing Bibhatsu, who stood at the forefront of battle, his vow fulfilled, said this: "By good fortune, Jishnu, your great vow is fulfilled; and by good fortune the wicked Vriddhakshatra is slain together with his son. Having come upon the army of Dhritarashtra's son, even the army of the gods, o Bharata, would falter in battle, Jishnu — there is no room here for doubt."

Krishna embraces his friend at the sunset of a fulfilled vow: the Lord's joy over the victory of His devotee. It is telling that "diṣṭyā" — "by good fortune" — is said twice: even the all-knowing praises what has come to pass as a gift of fate, sharing the joy with his friend. The verse teaches that a fulfilled duty is a festival in which the Lord Himself rejoices; and an embrace on the battlefield, upon a vow's completion, is dearer than any other reward — for in it lies recognition from above.
