These promises — «the fruit of all the Vedas», «the fruit of all holy places» — are constant in such books, and their structure is worth discussing. Behind them lies the claim that a single means equals the whole sum of other means. To read this book is as if to have read all the Vedas; to apply the ash is as if to have visited every shrine.
This device, as noted when reading Devī (20), is a mark of late composition: it appears once fulfilling everything has become impossible. The Vaishnava side uses the same device and also says the Name equals everything; and it must be admitted that these two cases cannot be told apart by the device alone. They can be told apart by another mark, and it is simple. Look at what is offered in exchange. If what is offered is a substance and an action — a mark, a bath, a rite — then the equivalence is doubtful: one material act cannot equal a thousand others.
But if what is offered is turning to a person, the equivalence needs no counting: one who has reached the master of a house is not obliged to go through every one of its doors. Separately worth mentioning is the word anapabruvaḥ, «unreproached», literally «one of whom nothing ill is said». It belongs to the same series as «does not hear of sin» (1.8); and again the fruit is described socially: a long life, and one of good name.
