The meeting of Kāśyapa and Takṣaka on the road reveals the clash of a healing power with a destroying power, and also a test of the purity of intention. Telling is Kāśyapa's admission that he goes to heal the king for the sake of 'both gain and dharma': here it is subtly noted that even a good deed may not be wholly disinterested if self-interest (artha) — the desire for reward — is mixed in with dharma. Here is an important distinction: service performed for reward is lower than disinterested service; and this admixture of self-interest, as what follows will reveal, will make Kāśyapa vulnerable to Takṣaka's persuasion. The confrontation of the two powers — Takṣaka, bearing death by the curse, and Kāśyapa, bearing life by the power of vidyā — is an image of the eternal struggle between poison and healing, fate and grace. Kāśyapa's confidence in the power of his knowledge is righteous, but mixed with a calculation of 'gain'; and this admixture will become the opening for his fall. Thus scripture teaches implicitly: only that good is pure which is done without thought of reward; the slightest self-interest opens the way to the fall even of a great adept.
