Takshaka said: 'If you are able to heal one bitten by me, then revive, O Kashyapa, this tree that I have bitten. Show the supreme power of your mantras and make the effort; I will burn this banyan (nyagrodha) before your eyes, O best of the twice-born.' Kashyapa said: 'Bite, O king of serpents, this tree that you have in mind; I will revive it, bitten by you, O serpent.' Suta said: 'Thus addressed by the great Kashyapa, that king of serpents approached and bit the banyan; and that tree, bitten by him, at once, O most radiant one, [suffused] with the venom of the venomous [serpent], burst into flame on every side and turned to ash. Having burned that tree, the naga again said to Kashyapa: "Make the effort, O best of the twice-born, revive this lord of the forest." Then Kashyapa, gathering up all the ashes of the tree [consumed] by the fiery power of the king of serpents, spoke these words: "Behold, O king of serpents, the power of my knowledge (vidya-balam) upon this tree; I will revive it before your eyes, O serpent." And that learned, glorious Kashyapa, best of the twice-born, by his knowledge revived the tree that had become a heap of ashes: he made it first a sprout with two leaves, then leafy and branching, and once more spreading wide. Seeing the tree revived by the great Kashyapa, Takshaka said: "This is most wondrous in you, O brahmin — that you are able to destroy poison, whether mine or that of one like me. For what purpose do you go there, O you rich in austerity? Whatever reward you wish to obtain from that best of kings — I myself will give it to you, however hard it may be to attain. For [when it comes to] a king struck down by a brahmin's curse, whose span [of life] has run out, however hard you strive, success will be doubtful; and then your fame, blazing, renowned in the three worlds, will fade away from here, like the sun deprived of its rays." Kashyapa said: "I go there for the sake of wealth; give it to me, then, O serpent, and I will return home, O best of serpents." Takshaka said: "Whatever wealth you wish to obtain from that king, I will now give you more than that; turn back, O best of the twice-born." Suta said: 'Hearing Takshaka's words, the wise and most radiant Kashyapa, best of the twice-born, reflected on the king. Possessing divine knowledge, the resplendent Kashyapa, learning that the span of life of that king, descendant of Pandu, had run out, turned back — having received from Takshaka as much wealth as he desired.'
