अस्मै वरं प्रदातुम् इच्छामि तत् मे विप्राः समेताः वितरध्वम्asmai varaṃ pradātum icchāmi tat me viprāḥ sametāḥ vitaradhvamI wish to grant him a boon; so permit me, O brahmins gathered here
सदस्याः ऊचुः बालः अपि विप्रः राज्ञां मान्यः सः सर्वान् कामान् अर्हतिsadasyāḥ ūcuḥ bālaḥ api vipraḥ rājñāṃ mānyaḥ saḥ sarvān kāmān arhatithe members of the assembly said: even a young brahmin is honored by kings; he deserves all desired [boons]
यथा च नः तक्षकः शीघ्रम् एतिyathā ca naḥ takṣakaḥ śīghram etibut let Takshaka also come quickly to us [into the fire]
नृपे वरदातुम् उद्यते होता नातिहृष्टः अब्रवीत् कर्मणि तक्षकः न एति तावत्nṛpe varadātum udyate hotā nātihṛṣṭaḥ abravīt karmaṇi takṣakaḥ na eti tāvatwhen the king was ready to give the boon, the hotar, not altogether joyful, said: in this rite Takshaka has not yet come

Here the king, moved by praise of Astika, prepares to grant him a boon — and thereby unwittingly opens the door to the serpents’ salvation. Janamejaya’s insight is telling: ‘he is no child — to me he seems an elder’; thus the king discerns in the young brahmin a maturity of wisdom exceeding his years. Here worth is shown to be measured not by age but by knowledge and righteousness; ‘even a young brahmin is honored by kings,’ declares the assembly. Yet notice too the persistence of wrath: even while favorably disposed to Astika, the king does not relent from vengeance — ‘Takshaka is my enemy, let him come.’ Thus in a single heart dwell both goodwill toward the righteous and an unquenched thirst for retribution; and the god of fire himself reveals that Takshaka is sheltered with Indra — that is, the chief culprit remains beyond reach. This again lays bare the futility of the rite: the king is ready to grant any boon, yet cannot attain his true goal — Takshaka’s destruction; and this very boon will become the instrument by which Astika turns the rite back.
