Here the rite reaches its peak: Indra himself descends, sheltering Takshaka, yet the power of the mantras draws the serpent out even from the embrace of a god. Janamejaya’s audacity is telling: he commands that Indra himself be cast into the fire together with Takshaka — wrath, having reached its limit, no longer fears even the king of the gods. Here is the fearsome force of the Vedic rite, compelling even the celestials; yet also a warning: wrath that knows no measure already trespasses against the gods, crossing every boundary. Notice the providential coincidence: at the very moment Takshaka is drawn toward the fire, the priests remind the king of the boon owed to Astika — thus salvation and destruction converge at a single point. This is the ‘antaram’ — the favorable moment Astika awaited: with the serpent already over the flame, a single word from the king can still turn everything around. Thus the scripture prepares the resolution, in which mercy will triumph over vengeance in the final instant.
